What is Architecture?

Before we can look at the best sketch ideas, it is important to start by answering the big question, “What is architecture?

Architecture is the art and science of developing the designs of buildings and structures. Therefore, if a person wants to build a new house, the first professionals who he/she calls is an architect. The professional listens to the client and then designs a building in line with his aspiration.

When crafting the designs of buildings, architects factor in many things, such as the building codes for the area, the neighborhood, access to water lines, drainable, and pathways. The architectural designs of buildings can be considered their “DNA” because they have all the details needed to put them up.

The following are common architectural styles that you should know as an architect:

  • Roman classical architecture: This category of architecture mainly refers to the styles that were common in ancient Rome.
  • Gothic Architecture: If you look at the top churches in Europe, they have a unique style, which is referred to as the Gothic style of architecture. It was the most dominant type of architecture in France for hundreds of years.
  • Baroque Architecture: This style of architecture started in Italy and is considered more emotional and dramatic. It features curving forms such as ovals, convex and concave.
  • Neoclassical architecture: As the name suggests, this category of architecture is a sort of revival of the prior Classical styles. It is reminiscent of the Roman and Greek forms.
  • Victorian architecture: With this type of architecture, the buildings are not limited to a specific design but feature a combination of elements such as Tudor, Romanesque, and Gothic. It was the most preferred building design during the industrial revolution.
  • Modern Architecture: This style is an umbrella term for the designs that became popular in the 20th century. They mainly feature a minimalist style that was practiced until the mid-20th century.
  • Neo-Futuristic Design: This architectural style is more idealistic to the future. It takes advantage of modern technology to deliver forms and structures that were previously considered impossible. One of the most notable buildings that feature this architectural design is the New Riverside Museum in Glasgow, which Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid designed.
